The Hawaii Kai Dog Park

The Hawai'i Kai Dog Park was developed by Hui 'Ilio Hawai'i and the Honolulu Department of Parks & Recreation, through a public-private partnership. It is a public, city dog park owned and operated by the City & County of Honolulu. Hui Ilio is the "adoptive park partner" whose responsibilities are to recruit and train volunteer park rangers, and to help with weeding, landscaping and other park improvements. Volunteer park rangers monitor the park and assist new park users to ensure that everyone will have an enjoyable dog park experience. Volunteers also help with maintenance projects such as landscaping and weeding.

The park is surrounded by breathtaking mountain and ocean views.

Location and hours: The dog park is located on Keahole Street at the makai end of the Hawaii Kai Park & Ride (across the street from Hawaii Kai Towne Center). There is ample parking available at the Park & Ride. The dog park is open daily from dawn to dusk, except for TUESDAY MORNINGS when it is closed from 7am to 12 noon for mowing and other maintenance. Poop bag dispensers are provided at the park. We rely on your donations of bags and/or cash to keep the dispensers filled. Contact us if you'd like to make a donation.

City & County of Honolulu Dog Park Rules & Regulations  Dog parks are different from other City parks; they have their own rules and restrictions. Before visiting the park, please read these rules.

Dog Park Etiquette:  To ensure a happy dog park experience, please review these helpful dog park tips.

Volunteer Opportunities: Support your local dog park by becoming a park ranger! We ask for a six-month commitment of two hours a week. Training is provided. A volunteer t-shirt is provided. Your dog is welcome to accompany you during your volunteer shift. To get more information or to sign up, please email hui-ilio@hawaii.rr.com.  Please also email us if you can help with special projects such as weeding and landscaping.  MAHALO to the 50 volunteers who showed up for our Planting Party on January 17th and the 25 volunteers who joined us on March 7th.  Not only did we install over 500 Naupaka plants on the fence borders, we also filled the mud holes in the park, and got a lot of weeding done.  Way to go team!

Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: Is there a restroom at the park?

A: No, there is not. The nearest public restroom is at Maunalua Bay beach park, about a block away. Please note that owners may not leave thier dogs in the park without a responsible adult. If you must leave for any reason, even for a few minutes, please take your dog with you.

Q: What is the Small Dog Park?

A: The enclosed area at the front-right of the park is for small dogs 18 pounds or under. While small dogs are welcome in any area of the park, some owners are not comfortable with their little guys playing amid the larger, rougher dogs. The small dog park is a safe haven for the toy types.

Q: Does my dog need a license to come into the park?

A: Yes. Please refer to the park rules and regulations. You can apply for a dog license at the Hawaiian Humane Society or any Satellite City Hall (there's one right across the street from the dog park). Use this humane society link to find out all about dog licenses. You can even download an application form.
